To state that “the grand jury report…alleged unethical relationships between multiple members of the City Council and the 49ers, whose Levi’s Stadium is located in Santa Clara” suggests that Levi’s Stadium is the property of the 49ers. In fact, Levi’s Stadium is owned by the City of Santa Clara. Its construction was financed mainly by the City’s Stadium Authority with total costs of more than $1.3 billion (https://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/Levi-s-Stadium-The-1-3-billion-bet-5687409.php#photo-6723396). The stadium has been leased to the San Francisco 49ers organization since 2014. Owner Jed York and the 49ers signed a contract regarding the use of the stadium with the Stadium Authority that year but in subsequent years the 49ers attempted to take advantage of City resources and to violate the terms of their contract. Councilmember Becker is one of five councilmembers elected over the last two elections cycles who owe their positions, at least in part, to the financial and political backing provided by the 49er organization (https://www.sanjoseinside.com/news/santa-clara-city-council-fires-city-attorney-brian-doyle-for-no-cause/#comment-1706387).
