Having untrained volunteers go out to areas they don’t know to attempt to locate homeless people using a flawed methodology results in unreliable data. Data the City of San Jose has attempted to use to claim “reductions” in homelessness. It’s a lie. If you ask simple questions about how they count RVs or get deep into the creeks – they don’t have good answers.

The biggest question journalists and the public must ask is why the City/County doesn’t use the “coordinated assessment” data updated by the outreach teams we pay millions of dollars to annually to track the issue? Instead of using an unreliable biennial count that is only done as a requirement, and during a point in time? It makes zero sense. But we do know, many cities see far more interactions with homeless individuals that are captured by outreach workers and tracked in the “coordinated system” than cited in PIT count. Time to ask very basic questions and hold these housing and homeless “service” agencies/politicians/city depts accountable for their deception and failures.
