Voters authorized the Legislature to go to standard or daylight saving time year-round, but nearly six years later no law is on the books. It takes a two-thirds vote, and also congressional action to go to daylight saving year-round.

The California Energy Commission voted to begin proceedings for two key initiatives that Gov. Gavin Newsom says could lower prices at the pump.

Legislative analysts raised red flags about the tentative deal for prison guards, the lack of time to review the contracts negotiated by the Newsom administration, flaws in computing salary comparisons and vacancy rates and the bottom-line cost of $5 billion over three years.

Southern California school boards have been battling with Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta over book bans and other culture wars in the classroom. 

On Monday, the Assembly finished its votes on Newsom’s series of infrastructure streamlining bills, although not without reservations. Today, the Senate is expected to take its final vote on the infrastructure package, agreeing to some Assembly amendments before sending it to Gov. Newsom’s desk.

One bill will require social media companies to share advertising revenue with news publishers.

Much of the Assembly Public Safety Committee's debate centered on whether it's better to treat the fentanyl crisis as a public health issue, or to see it as a public safety emergency where harsher punishments could deter drug dealers.
